What is bamboo flooring?

Bamboo flooring can be a sustainable and ecologically friendly flooring option.  Bamboo leaves are processed into a natural surface that covers a material that is similar to hardwood flooring.  It shares some of the same positive benefits of a hardwood floor with some of the same drawbacks as well.  This can make for a very attractive wood flooring option that is more resistant to water damage, stains and warping than its hardwood flooring counterpart.

Benefits

Bamboo plants belong to the flowering plant family, Poaceae, which is a type of grass.  There are nearly 1500 species of bamboo that can be found in Asia, Australia, North America, South America and the Sub-Saharan portion of Africa.  It can grow in several different altitudes and among various climate conditions, although it prefers tropical climates.  Bamboo flooring is an ecologically friendly choice in flooring because:

·         Made from natural vegetation

·         Bamboo is a highly renewable resource that reaches maturity in 3-5 years

·         Grows much faster than hardwood trees that take 20+ years to reach maturity

Maintenance

Bamboo flooring is fairly easy to care for.  Just sweep or vacuum it regularly so you can rid yourself of small debris.  Occasionally you can take a damp mop to clean it using a non-wax, non-alkaline hardwood or bamboo floor cleaner.
