Solid or Engineered Wood Flooring?

There are several options to choose from when shopping for hardwood paneling for your floors.  One choice you will have to make is whether to purchase solid or engineered flooring.  What are the differences?

  • Solid hardwood flooring is milled from a single ¾” thick piece of hardwood.  The solid wood expands and contracts with the changing humidity of your home.  To compensate for this, installers will leave an expansion gap between the floor and wall that is usually hidden by base molding or quarter round.
  • Engineered flooring, on the other hand, is made up of numerous layers of wood that is stacked in a cross-grain configuration.  This minimizes the expanding and shrinking of your flooring.
